I've rebuilt the generator, and now am replacing the voltage regulator, have verified that the generator is putting out voltage. What is the best way to verify that that there is amperage coming out of the voltage reg to the batteries? I used to just pull off a cable when the tractor was running, but I've heard that can reverse your polarity on you. Thanks!

Every year I have to buy a new set of batteries for my 4020 Diesel. Is there some way to avoid this? I had the generator rebuilt a year ago.

Might try replacing the voltage regulator, could be that they're not charging at all. Also could be that you have a slow drain when the tractor is turned off.

If you don't have a voltmeter, you can buy one at harbor freight for less than 4.00. Place the leads across the A1 and A2 terminals and you should read around 28 volts or more. Now place the leads across the two batteries and you should read within .5 volt of the generator reading. If you don't, the cut out relay section of the regulator is faulty or you have a wiring problem.

Unhooking the battery won't prove anything on a diesel. On a gas it proved the generator was supplying the ignition power.

The 4020 generator is only rated at 10 amps so it takes a while to charge.

A sensitive volt meter should show the battery voltage rising from 12 volts or a little under after a start and the voltage should rise to 28.4 volts if all is perfect, but at a 10 amp charge rate that may take several hours, longer if the lights are on.

I have an ammeter that works by putting it next to a charging or a starter wire (two different position) and that would read charging current. I have seen clamp on ammeters for DC but they ran more than $50 each at Sears a couple years ago.
