Am putting a Marvel Schebler carb on a 4020. What is the electric wire for and what does it hook to?

That wire goes to a Fuel Shutoff Solenoid. I had a
bad Solenoid on a JD 2520 once, and when I went to
JD for a replacement, he sold me an needle valve and
it did fit and work fine.

That wire hooks to a point hot with ignition on, not the coil though because its fed trough a resistor. Needs to be connected at the ignition switch and that depends on what version of the 4020 you have. There were at least three different sets of switches and wiring. Or pick up that switched 12 volts at the light switch, that's only on with ignition on.

Few people including Deere shops get the MS carburetor to run well. Back about 1971 there's a Deere SB that says when you can't tune it, get a Zenith. And Zeniths were also often equiped with the main jet shutoff solenoid.

I think you're seeing a fuel cutoff solenoid. Its supoposed to shut off fuel when the key is turned off, so it won't 'diesel'. They were problematic and often replaced with a needle valve. I'm trying to find just such a valve for mine. The one JD sells doesn't fit.
