I don't normally come here. I am usually on the Oliver site. I need some help. My father-in-law has an early model 4020. He needes a carb for it. The dealer told him his was beyond repair. $800 for a new one. Tried this site for a rebuild and they are out of stock. His is the round cast version-not the later square one. Will either one work? I desperately need one that will work. Thanks.

The roundish one is Zenith, a picnic to make work compared to the squarish one, made by Marvel-Shebler. The MS takes up about 20 pages in the early 4020 shop manual.

This site might have one, I'm sure that Shoup (www.shoupparts.com) and Sloan Express (www.sloanex.com) have them. My 2007 Sloan express catalog says $549 and shows different numbers for 3010/3020 and for 4010/4020.

There is a 70s vintage JD service bulletin that recommends switching from the M-S to the Zenith carburetor when the dealer can't get the M-S to work.

There may be some M-S around relatively cheap since hardly anyone can make them run good, including Deere dealers. But that may not be a bargain.

That Central Tractor company has changed its name and moved south of Des Moines and surely has those carburetors too. Places that sell used and new parts like Abilene Machine should be able to supply them too.

Yes either one will work. The round one like you say his is, is a Zenith. The square one is a Marvel-Schebler. My 4020 had a Marvel-Schebler, but 15 or 20 years ago i got a rebuilt Zenith for it from CT farm & Country at Des Moines, Ia. Im not sure that company is still in business.

I repaired a RUSTY one for a 3020 a few months ago. I bead blasted it clean. Parts were readily available from DEERE.

If your carb is rusted WORSE than that one, it must be REALLY bad!

Oh, yeah, the carb works FINE after it's ordeal.

Forgot to mention. You may expand your search and also include one from a 4010,3010,3020 too. We have one for a 3020 on our 4020 and it runs fine. The load is adjustable and the cylinders sizes are the same just 2 more to feed, but you only feed one at a time anyhow.

Maybe a good time to get a second opinion ?

What exactly is to be wrong with it making it beyond repair ?

I would not spend very much on the square alum. carbs. they are hard to impossible to get to run right. So don't buy one of those !

I think it is cast. Haven't seen it for couple weeks. The dealer he took it to said it was not repairable. The tractor sat out all summer with the air cleaner hose disconnected. I know the choke mechanism worked on the outside but the butterfly did not move. When we did get it to run a little gas poured out the front. I haven't looked at it since. I don't know if it is a parts availability issue, a ruined issue, or a dealer didn't want to mess with it issue.

This is sounding more and more like a don't want to or know how to mess with it issue. Only 1 summer sitting ? I have saved 2cyl. carbs. that have sat for who knows how many years. I bet you have hope if you send it somewhere else.
