4020 3pt. doesn't go up smoothly

My 4020 sits in the shed alot. When I lift the 3 pt., it tends to jerk. It gets better if I move it a few times. If I shut the tractor off with the 3 pt. completely raised, it starts to lift when I hit the starter. Steering and brakes work good, do I have air in the system or hyd. pump problems? Thanks.

If you park the tractor with the 3 point up, it will fall and will start to rise while cranking. That's normal. Its easier on the starter and battery if you lower the 3 point and don't make it rise while cranking.

Other hydraulic problems depend on the age of the 4020. Side console 4020 have totally different hydraulics and hydraulic problems from earlier 4020.

If the 3 point is rising while cranking, you don't have the loss of pump prime that my web page on adding a check valve fixes. Link is:

Gerald, thanks for the reply. My 4020 is a 1969 model. A couple of weeks ago the solenoid went out of the diesel pump. I noticed then that the starter was raising the 3 pt. but it was jerking while doing so. It also jerks when I lift it while driving across the yard. So my problem is something different than you covered on your website?

Yup a '69 tractor is a side console and its hydraulics are totally different. I note some service bulletins on the later tractors and what ones I have show valve failures or internal plumbing leaks and the check valve is then located up front near the reservoir that feeds the main pump. But if your 3pt is lifting while cranking, you have a good supply of oil to the main pump. The problem I had and cured with the added check valve was that I had no hydraulics for several seconds after starting and lost all hydraulics soon after I pushed in the clutch pedal. After fixing it, I can let it sit a month, hold down the clutch (and so keep the transmission pump in my synchro-range from turning), start the engine and lift the loader off the ground at least 6' while holding the clutch in. I hardly ever run out of hydraulic power while shifting gears unless I pick up the loader and run the steering lock to lock all with the clutch pedal pushed in and its hard to do all of those at once...

Your problem isn't that. Jerking sounds like air being sucked into the pump which might mean a leak, like on the suction side of the pump, probaby a shaft seal.

Or it could the L/D control is in the wrong position and a heavy load causes it to back off on lifting.

So far I've not had a problem like that with my 4020 3 point. On my MF-135 it shakes when pumping and that's probably because of getting the remains of its hydraulic screen stuck in a pump valve. There are 9 cylinders I think on the Deere pump, one of them could have eaten a piston maybe or a valve so the pumping isn't smooth though that should make for fast shaking because its turning at crankshaft speed. That four cylinder pump on my MF-135 is turning at 540 rpm PTO speed.

It could be that the control cable... wait, there's no control cable to rust up on the side console...

Bob your tractor is leaking oil back to sump when not running. A check valve can be installed to cure problem. Look in archives for Gerald J's posts as he has the JD bulletin #. tx Jim

Thanks for the reply. I must be doing something wrong. When I click on the various numbers in the archive, nothing changes. I can't seem to view anything. I'm new to this so I've never looked in the archives before.
