4020 Differential Installation

The pinion shaft in my 4020's locking differential broke and caused enough housing damage to warrant a complete replacement. I obtained a salvaged part, replaced worn cluthces, swapped ring gears, and cleaned the differential and transmission cases. Its now ready to install - but I need a lesson on shimming and measuring backlash. Can anyone explain the install procedure or point me in the direction of an article/web page that would?

Preload--.002-.005"
Backlash----.011-.015" Do this by moving shims from one side of the bearing quils to the other.

I hate to ask but, did you set the pinion to the measurement stamped on the top of the housing and the teeth end of the pinion to set the pinion in the case to the right depth of mesh in the ring gear. Just curious since you didn't say anything about that in your previous post. chris

I don't have a tech manuel right here for the exact specs. but here is what you need to do. First establish side to side endplay in the differential by adding shims under the bearing quill. If there are o-ring seals on the quills don't put them on untill all the bearings are set up. Make sure you add the shims to the bearing quill so it moves the ring gear away from the pinion to avoid interfearance. Once you have a measurable end play you need to set up the preload on the bearings. So if you have .003 endplay and need to get .004 preload you are going to remove .007 of shims from under one of the bearing quills. Now you have the correct bearing ajustment on the differential. To ajust the backlash between the pinion gear and ring gear you move shims from under the bearing quill on one side of the differential and put them under the other bearing quill. Put all the hardware in and torque it when you mave your measurements. When you are assembling things it is good to rotate the moving parts to seat the bearings before taking any measurements. As you ajust the backlash take the measurements at three equally spaced points around the ring gear and average them. This should help some, as I said I do not have the exact specs. on peload and backlash but they should be in you service manuel or I'm sure someone here can give them.
