Cleaned the heck out of battery terminals. Did same click. Was warmer today so I thought about taking off the starter. My plow truck sitting next to tractor also pooped the nest today. So I set a mister heater below starter and worked on plow truck. Got truck running and moisture out of the lift pump too. Came back to tractor and took a propane torch and heated the starter casting to the solenoid. Heard a click but thought it was the oak leaf that was on fire and snow dripping on that..so kept at it for a bit more. Then gave it a try at 13 degrees. Shazam! Once starter took off I didn't want to quit but that 4020 started with no circulation heater or anything else at 13 degrees. Something must have had condensation or something and froze the solenoid up. Thanks for the great advice to all. Gerald...also good point on being able to stand next to the starter and not laying under it in the snow:}

Been there. Changed that starter, standing up.

Way back when I had a 6 volt bug, when it got to be 3 or 4 years old the solenoid got sticky because the plunger got rusty. Your solenoid is closer to 38 years old... Might be that a cleaning would help for a while, but I'd hope that the plunger in a new one would be zinc or cad plated so it wouldn't rust for a decade or two.

I'm glad the heat worked for you. I wonder if it will stick again.

This was the first time it has stuck. I noticed that there are some thin linear cracks in a black plastic collar that links the solenoid to the solenoid casting of the starter. Is that actually plastic? Looks to be about 2 inch cylinder. If it sticks again..will have to figure out how to dry it out and get it replaced or sealed.

That's a rubber dust boot, and they do get a little beat up with age. Probably, the part that interfaces between the 2 parts, being more protected, is still doing it's job.

If you wind up tearing into it, the boot, key # 33, part # R11127 is less than $12.00.

The solenoid, key #30, part # AR77255, is less than $45.00.

Bob thx for the diagram and parts listing. I torch heated right where key #22 is pointed to. The linear cracks appear on the smaller cylinder of the solenoid body. That dust boot must be right inside that part of sol body.

I had moisture in my meyers plow pump after this cold snap. The bottom screen ices up and the valve to drop the blade sticks. That happens on occasion. Wondering if the temp swing caused condensation on about everything. I will see what happens over the next couple of months. I should only have to replace the solenoid if it gets bad on me. Thx again
