4020 Electrical (thought it was a starter) problem

When starting tractor, starter remained cranking until I could remove the battery cable. Had the started & cylinoid (sp?) tested and tested O/K. Was told it was most likely the starter switch, replaced switch and when I reassembled I had the same problem. This is a 1966 JD4020 Diesel 24V system. Any ideas where I should look next?

Thanks
Paul Mellen

Paul, the copper disk and lugs in the solenoid switch are probably pitted causing starter to stay engaged. Bench testing under no load is not the same heat build-up as installed on tractor so disk isn't as inclined to stick. Tx Jim

I have a 1966 4020 with 24 volts that was doing the same thing for years I had trouble with it. The starter would keep running until it pulled the batteries down. I eventually figured out that it wasn't wired up properly. Also the batteries must be equally charged or that could keep the starter from releasing. I got the JD Service Manual and wired the tractor myself accordingly and put two new batteries on it. That was 4 years ago this July and it hasn't failed yet(still have the same two batteries in it)
