4020 Diesel Fuel Gauge Problems

I bought a new fuel gauge from John Deere yesterday for our 4020 Diesel. They informed me that it was a newer gauge and that it had three connections instead of two. I hooked it up like the instructions said with the sender, ignition, and ground wire and it goes to full. When the key is turned on the gauge mores farther past full til it is pegged. I took off the sender wire at the sender and grounded it and the gauge goes to empty. Does this mean the sender is bad or are my connections at the gauge wrong? Thanks.

Just installed that very same gauge on a 3020. First question I have for you is it a single battery tractor? What I found out that these tractors are positive ground and if you have it hooked up backwards when you hook up the gauge it will peg all the way over. Once you hook up the battery (positive to ground) correctly follow the directions and you will have no issues.

It has two batteries and i believe it is positive ground. The positive from one battery goes to the starter and the negative from the other goes there too. The other two terminals are connected to each other and there is a small wire from the other positive terminal to the frame. Does that mean its positive ground?

Sounds like the battery is hooked up correctly. Now to wire gauge the positve goes to ground on the tractor. The negative should go to the wire that is connected to ignition switch. Then the other wire is from the sending unit. Usually the sending unit wire is orange unless it has been changed out. Is this how you hooked it up?

Thats how i hooked mine up. When i turn the key the gauge goes past full and when the key is turned off the gauge will settle right around full. With the key on and the sender wire grounded the gauge moves to empty and then back to full once the ground is released.

Then the next two things I would check is he sending unit. First method is by taking a magnent and take the gas cap off and pull the sending unit up & down to see if the gauge moves at all. The next thing I would check is the wire from the gauge to the sending unit for a short. If the wire isn't shorted the only thing left is the sending unit is no good.

I checked the wire with a continuity tester and it doesn't seem to have a short. Im assuming its the sending unit but i've seen guys on here talking about having to match the right sender with the right gauge or it wont work because of the difference in the ohms range. The gauge i have is part # RE54427

What happens when you just disconnect the sending unit from the gauge?

It stays pegged the whole time even if the sender wire is diconnected. Once i hooked the gauge up and turned the key it went to full, the only way to get it to move from full is to ground the sender wire.

With the old guage installed, remove the wire from the sender, if it pegs the guage, the sender is bad. Not sure about your new unit.
