When shifting my '65 4020 from 7-8 gear with mid to upper throttle she doesn't go in as solid or crisp as she used to. I now back off on the throttle when shifting between 7-8 to get her to go in more quickly. Once in 8th she pulls good. The oil level is good, pressure on dash guage is good, all other gear shifts are solid. I do not use 7th or 8th very often and am wondering if this is somthing I need to have repaired right away or can it be put off if not used that often? Is the repair somthing an average mechanically inclined guy can do or is it reccommended to have a professional shop do it? What kind of cost am I looking at if done by a shop? Thanks for your input.

Have you tried replacing the transmission filters?Thts the first thing to do.Next; a master gage should be used to check the transmission pressure. If both check out then you might try adjusting the rate of shift valve. Its the second fromm the rear on the left side of the transmission under the clutck valve.Remove the plug and turn the valve (out)counterclockwise with a screwdriver. The next thing to check is the accumulator spring. It could be broken.

Typically it is the shift from 6th to 7th that is slow since 7th is direct drive and the engine has to start spinning an extra 147 pounds of weight since everything locks up and the whole transmission starts to turn.
