I have a 4020 Diesel (24V) that apparently is not charging. Any tips on determining whether it is the generator or regulator would be appreciated.

Thanks

Is the cut-out contact in the regulator corroded or burned away? Is there current flowing through the field windings? Is the fan belt new or not glazed? Is the generator pulley origional?

#1.insure that the ground strap is correct on the left battery.
#2 does the idiot light on the dash work.if the light is burnt out or corroded it wont charge.
#3 disconnect wires at generator, with key on,a test light should show power at all 4 terminals,of the regulator.
#4 disassemble generator and remove armature.check the brushes.use a vom to check for continuity of the field coils.continuity should be from inside top term. to bottom term.of generator housing.if all this checks good,it should charge

I hate to disagree, but a generator 24 Volt system will function JUST FINE with a failed "idiot light". However, in an alternator system the "idiot light" is part of the "excite circuit" that gets the alternator charging at each startup.

If you have a generator, the "idiot light" is not your problem.

Make sure the small wire is connected from the frame to the LEFT battery and not rusted off.
