4020 12 volt coversion

I just purchaced a 1967 4020 desiel that was converted overto a 12 volt system but the person that did it ran the alt. wires through the old volt regulator and it does not charge my batteries .is there any body that can tell me how to do it right soitwill charge my batteries. it has the 12 volt starter on it all ready thank you

They probably left the old generator's regulator in place, and used it as a junction block to connect the old "ARM" wires to the battery. If that's what they've done, that's OK, and NOT causing your problem. Get a voltmeter, and check the voltage on the large output stud on the alternator, with the engine "OFF", and then start then engine, rev it up a bit, and re-check the voltage, and post back with the results.

What make is the alternator? How many smaller wires are connected to it? If it is a Delco internally regulated alternator, it MAY be a one-wire version, or the original version that requires 3 wires connected to it to operate.

dont have a volt meter . so i took off alt and had it checked works fine.the alt is an acdelco with one place to bolt on a wire and then a place to hook up two wires with a plug. it has only the one wire bolted to it the other two are just taped off.
