I have a 68 model 4020 that has been converted to a 12 volt system using 2-12 volt batteries connected in parallel. I've read countless and great articles from this site on understanding the 24 volt system, but I can't find anything on understanding the system I've described. Problem is, I'm not a mechanic and don't understand much about wiring so I was hoping someone could described how my system should be wired(battery to battery then to starter etc.).

Also, I've read that the proper way to jump-off a 24 volt system is to go from +(tractor) to +(booster) and -(tractor) to -(booster). Is that the proper way to jump-off a 12 volt system.

If its been converted to 12 volts its NO DIFFERENT than every car or truck made since the late 50s. Two batteries in parallel gets twice the current but only 12 volts. They jump just like every other 12 volt system. The two batteries should have positive hooked to positive and negative to negative. With negative grounded. And probably an alternator instead of a generator.

For that tractor the 24 volt system is gone. You need not understand it. It wasn't complicated at all, but not the greatest for all the tasks.

jddb, If your tractor is a 12 volt conversion of a original 24 volt system, It will most likely have a 12 volt alternator installed on it. With an alternator the complete electrical system is now a negative ground system. So to correctly connect your two 12 volt batteries in parallel 12 volt negative ground application, the positive post of one battery will be connected to the positive post of the other and the same cable will connect to the top of the starter solenoid. Each negative post of each battery will be grounded to the frame of the tractor with two individual cables or grounding can be done with one cable hooking both negative post together and then to the frame, either way will work and do the same thing on the ground / negative side of the batteries. The two original / individual supply circuits from your starter and charging system that are colored brown and blue will connected together. If one 12V battery of a 24V system is dead you can boost it off a 12V machine like any other. Just don't park allowing the vehicles to touch chassis to chassis. A dead 12V machine can be boosted off one 12V battery of a 24V machine. A totally dead 24V machine can be boosted from two separate 12V machines and two pairs of jumper cables. Again don't let any of the three chassis touch. If you don't know for certain than don't. Lots of people with acid in the face, ruined electrical equipment and fires from guessing.
