I'm considering changing my 4020 to a 12volt system. Any pros/cons on the subject?
Thanks

I converted a '64 4020D to 12 volt setup a little over a year ago. I don't regret it one bit. I also have a 3010D with 24 volt setup. That one will probably stay 24 until something goes on it.

The problem with 24 volt is you have to keep it balanced or add 12 volt resistors. Thus if you hook up anything that requires 12 volt electrical power, you need to make sure you draw evenly off both batteries.

Some day I plan to pull a round baler with my 4020, and many of those have electrical controls...I did not want to mess with the problems (have minor in electrical engineering, so not like I'm not capable).

If everything is in proper repair, and have quality components, either setup should work fine.

I agree with Bob and 55. If you convert, keep all the old 24V parts safely in a labeled box in a cool dry place. Someday a colector will pay extra for a tractor with all the proper origional parts.
Off topic but anyways. Makes me cross when looking at purchasing an old tractor. Just to find the fenders, pto shields, battery covers and three point hitch parts etc have got lost over the years. The vender doesn't seem to realize replacing those parts may cost more than what thier tractor is worth.
Now 12V v.s. 24V? Well it depends on who is doing the service and what the operating condions are.
You can build a 12V system to the max and it will still barly roll the engine over in cold weather.A built 24V system will start the tractor in the same circumstances.
It's the same reason why 1HP motors are about tops on 120V. Yet a 2HP and even a 3HP runs fine on the same sized wiring with 240V.

Many of them were changed over to 12 Volt. I have done conversions for people that insisted upon it, I do not push the idea.

That being said, I have never converted my own 24 Volt 4020 to 12 Volts and do not intend to. If you do the repairs and maintenance needed to get your 24 Volt system in shape, it should work for many years.

Some of the 12 Volt conversions never did spin the engine over as fast as the old 24 Volt systems.

I understand there are gear-reduction starters available for certain newer Deeres that fit back to the 4020's and work well for this application. If I were to convert, I'd look into getting one of those starters. Check the archives, information has been posted here several times on which newer gear reduction starters to use.

The proper operation of the fuel gauge can be an issue with a 12 Volt negative ground conversion, as the fuel gauge in a 24 Volt 4020 operates at 12 Volts POSITIVE ground. Getting it to work properly will involve getting a sender and gauge for a newer (factory 12 Volt) 4020.

The 12 volt starter will have a tough time turning a diesel over especially in cold weather.
I think the reason Deere used 24V in the first place is because a 12 V starter wasn't adequate.
