i have 1966 4020 diesel P/S that does not smoke when "trompin the throttle" and seems like a real dog, but at 2500rpm on the forage harvester workin a little she looks like a freight train... now my 72 4000 diesel S/R is extremly snappy when "floggin the horses" and smoke rolls and at 2500rpm does not smoke much but still seems to run better than the 4020.. is there a way to adjust fuel delivery at hi/lo rpm?? or is this just how is is? both tractors have been freshened up about 1600 hrs ago with engine kits, new injectors, rebuilt fuel pumps, and no my fuel pumps have not been turned up i would never do that to my beloved 40's.thanks alot from the home of FLT 93 and 949

Hi The injection pump on your late 4000 is an updated version of the one on your '66 4020. The fuel delivery valves are different, as well as the fuel metering valve, which will make it alot more snappier. Also Advanced timing will make a big difference on either pump.

Over the 30 some years since your 4020 was made, that oil bath air cleaner could have easily worked up a permanent clog to restrict the intake air flow so it runs rich with normal injection. I read this is a common problem with earlier AC tractors. The steel wool cleaning media often needs an extreme cleaning to get back to normal airflow (though converting to a paper filter would be easier and give superior filtration) and there might still be a JD kit for that conversion.

Are the air filters equally clean? Have the precleaner tops been popped down from over tightening? My gas 4020 had that as one of the problems that made it smoke like an IH diesel when I first bought it.
