4020 Battery Problem

I have a JD 4020 Diesel with a 24V electrical system. A couple of weeks ago when it was real cold out, I tried to start the tractor. When I pushed the starter button the starter kept cranking after it was released. I turned the key off but the starter kept cranking. I shot some ether to it and it started. I then used the tractor for about 15 minutes, with the key off. After I stopped the tractor it would not start.
The batteries are both dead. Question what effect did running the tractor with the key off have on the batteries? Did that fry the batteries?

Did the starter stop running when the engine started. The solenoid could have stuck causing the starter to continue running after the tractor started and killed the batteries. There is also the possibility that the bendix also remained engaged and with the engine spinning the starter caused it to self destruct and short out. Running with the key off should not have caused any problem since it is a generator.

Sounds like the solinoid got stuck, and then when it started it was still stuck. At that point if the starter didn't stop turning you may have killed the starter and drained the batterys also

How old are the batteries?

The batteries were new last year.
