Sometimes when i start the tractor the starter stays engaged, the only way to stop it is to take the battery cable off. This is my brothers tractor, stored in my shed. Just wondering if you could help? Tractor is 12 volt positive ground, I Think!

Gerald is right on.The contact plate in the solenoid can be reverses in most of those solenoids and the contact buttons filed down. That will save you the cost of a new solenoid. Then I would remove the starter drive and lightly grease the armature shaftthat the drive rides on.Use a good high temperature grease or a white grease like Lubriplate is what I have always used.If that doesn't fix it, replace that after production relay.I have never seen one of those go bad but I am sure it probably happens.

Its either burned contacts on the starter solenoid, or stiff linkage from the solenoid, or a sticky starter button, or contacts sticking in the relay between the starter button and the solenoid (that my tractor has added sometime). I replace all but the starter button when that sticking at the starter (threw the windings out of the armature) and it hasn't stuck since. Sometimes it doesn't engage, but it has a new solenoid and bendix.

I once ran into a JD 450-C crawler that would have the same problem.I found it had the wrong starter drive in it. I compared it with one that I had out of a repair job.. Sure as s--t it was the problem. My rebuilder just replaced the old bendix with the same larger size that caused the problem. Once the correct bendix was installed it worked great...[ 3 years now ]. And no it didn't make a racket when it was trying to start , sounded normal....
