What is the purpose of the ventilator pump in the early 4020 / 404CI diesel engines. I know the later engines did away with the pump. Was it used for crankcase ventilation?

I have a 4020 94xxx without the pump so I assume this tractor has a newer engine installed. The SN tag is missing from then engine.

Yes, the pump was there for crankcase ventilation. I don't know why they installed them in the first place, other than it was a carryover from the 4010 and a lof of the two-bangers had positive crankcase ventilation. Perhaps the engineers decided it was necessary on their first attempt at building a multi-cylinder inline diesel.

Basically it was a good idea.Positive crankcase ventilation. The displacement of a crankcase changes as the engine turns over with the pistons going up and down and sometimes it can create a slight vacuum.Deere did this to prevent dirty air from entering the crankcase. The problem arose when the air cleaner became a bit restricted and since the vent pump took its filtered air from the air cleaner, the net result was the engine sucked oil right out of the vent pump.I blocked off dozens of them for this reason over the years.

Oh, it was certainly a good idea, just not necessary, as near 40 years of successive engine building without PCV has proven.

Thanks for the help and understanding of the ventilator pump. Good to know if I ever have problems with the pump it can be disabled and plugged off and not have any worries.

Locally, the first time the tractors were ever in the (dealers) shop, the mechanics would crimp the line, blocking them off, without.....on any tractor I'm aware of, saying anything to the owners.....
