Bought a 4020D/PS,#137272 last fall. Went to replace batts and found this hook-up: two 12v batts, mismatched, both negs. cabled to frame separatly, pos cabled together and to selenoid. The starter is JD, marked '96 and 12v. The tractor started last fall, once on a jump and then by itself. Lights seemed to work OK. Does it sound like it's been converted to 12v from 24v? Is this the right way to do it?

Some people prefer to use two sixes in series. Reducing the number of separators needed between the cells makes more room for lead & acid which can be more cranking power.

Buckanddeere; You don't know a thing about batteries do you. Adding two 6 volt batteries in series doubles the voltage but keeps the amperage teh same so those would be some big 6 volt batteries to equal two 900cca 12 volt batteries. Maybe you should tell us where to get 1500 cca plus 6 volt batteries.. Lead and acid doesn't equal more cranking power plate area and plate composition does. Unless you want to spend upwards of $200.00 per battery you can't beat a pair of the the modern 12 volt HD high cca tractor batteries.

Mike are you aware that the six volt batteries plate and surface area is more than twice as big per cell as a 12V with the same external measurements? Apparently not. By eliminating the extra cell to cell internal connections with the six volt only requiring two intercell dividers instead of 5 like a 12V cell. There is more room for lead and acid. It's also easier to keep two sixes in series charged and putting full power to the starter. Two 12's in parallel always have different resistance in their internal and external circuit paths. With two 12's in parallel one battery always provides more current when under high demand such as starting. Usually not noticed until cold weather or the overworked battery fails. You have never measured battery internal resistance in you life. Or know how to measure low resistance electrical circuits. Unlikely you have even measured voltage at various points or checked current while cranking.

Pete, Yeppers its certainly 12 volts as you described it, and the 2 batteries connected in parallel is the only way it could be done if you still use TWO 12 volt batteries, which certainly helps when cranking that diesel. If you have to replace those batteries, I would use a matched set next time and still good heavy duty high amp/hr or CCA rated units.

Post back or e mail jmn50@msn.com any questions.

Good Luck n God Bless

Pete, like battery posts cabled together & the 12V on the starter says it a 12 volt conversion.. Nothing wrong with that, many have been converted with great success..
