Funny funny 24 volt system!
I know these clues are screaming something, I just don't know what. Someone on this list knows!

- Oil light works ONLY when lights are on
- Fuel gauge goes from pegged on "E" (voltage?) to "F" when lights are turned on.

I repaired a couple wires that were touching & of poor quality by the light switch.

Then flasher started working, but, ALL the lights start to flash -- including oil lamp! Not the flasher itself, or its ground, I have a spare and that didn't change anything. Flasher only, flasher was really bright. May have burnt that out, will check today.

Right (as sitting) battery had a bad negative terminal, arced real bad, replaced, now no flasher, oil lamp & fuel gauge still same as above, no flasher, but could be burnt bulb.

I know I need to ground the fenders, yet, in testing, did run temporary grounds & didn't seem to make any difference.

This is definitely saying something, but what? Please don't suggest switching to 12 volt, it's not my tractor, I'm just renting if for the season, and a little elbow grease to make things work will make the guy kind on my rent.

Something I find curious: Gen light & temp guage never go "funny". Where are they at in the circuit that that's the case?

What kind of isolation testing can I do? I tried isolating the lights, but running one wire direct, no lights at all. I've got the 3000 series service manual, but light on diagnostics running down this type of issue. If I wanted to know why the cigarette lighter doesn't work, well, then I've got a procedure :^). Acutally it's quite good, and all the wiring diagrams are quite helpful.

Thanks mucho for any clues, insight, et al!

ALL THE LIGHTS , FUEL GAUGE, OIL LIGHT, ALL GO TO THE FRAME FOR GROUND , THE LEFT HAND BATTERY + POST NEEDS A WIRE TO THE FRAME TO MAKE THIS GROUND. YOU CAN BLOW ALL 4 LAMPS LIKE FLASH BULBES IF NOT GROUNDED AND THERE IS A SHORT IN THE STARTER. I ONCE FOUGHT A NEW 4010 THAT WOULD RUN THE BATTERYS DOWN WHEN IT RAINED. TOOK 4 YEARS AND NEW FIELDS IN THE STARTER TO FIX. DEERE COULDNT FIGGURE IT OUT EITHER. DON

The wire on the left hand battery at the rear has a ground wire on it. It should have a 20 amp slow blow fuse in it. If it is blown you will not have a fuel gauge , no oil light , or one set of light in the fenders don't work right because that fuse makes a ground for all those units. Best thing to do is change it to 12 Volts.

I had similiar probs with mine. How is the ground wire from the bat to the trans case. Unreal how that can make a difference. It fixed all of mine. Someone said that if that ground wire burns or the fuse blows if so equipped there is a internal short in the starter. Funny 24v is right. Good Luck!

Scott,if the rear battery cable goes across under floorboard to other battery then it needs a ground wire on rear Lh batt. post to frame.I use an inline fuse so if there is a short it will blow fuse. This wire gives a ground for lights and gauge. The 24v are split at key switch. One side is neg.and other side is pos.Starter and generator are isolated from frame(no ground). 24v systems are differant from 12v systems but just take some understanding.HTH,Jim B

Ah yep -- I neglected one detail, that yes, things improved much once that ground was "improved". I will put in an inline fuse.

Before improving this ground: One bright light on LH, 3 very dim ones & no blinker.

After: The one was "less bright" (overbright?), and other three were reasonably bright & blinker started working.

I wonder if somewhere I have a wire in the harness (most probably to fenders/back) that's grounding out some? Would that give this kind of behavior?

Thanks again!

SMT

Some one may have tinkered the lamp connections or there is a path to ground through a dirty/failing starter or generator. The lights if equal sized, equal number they will work without any change in performance with or without the ground wire connected. Two should be fed (-) and two should be fed with (+). Gotta check the diagram for the rears when at home tonight. The + & - loads have to be balanced or she's doomed.
