What's the biggest size field cultivator a 4020 diesel can hassle without duals? Dad pulled a 15' with ours when he bought it new in 1965. We've got 18-4-34 rear tires w/ fluid and front and rear weights. Just curious

Hi, I ran 4020's for years on my Dad's Farm in Canada. The Power shift 65 was turned up to just over 100 HP. The Synchro 66 probably pulled the cult. even better than the power shift. We had a 24 ft field cultivator which dad removed the two outside shanks on and used it as a 22 ft. With single tires traction would have been an issue with this size, but with a set of clamp on duals it would walk around all day in 4th gear. Of course we usually ran the tractor with the button out to get max revs. Only in the wettest spring low spots or up steep hills would you have to drop down to 3rd gear.

Even with single tires, as long as the soil was firm enough to get traction you should be able to pull 18 to 20 ft.

The tough part with using singles is that as soon as you are slipping, your burning fuel and not moving forward, so you can pretty quickly justify a set of duals on fuel usage alone, as the 4020's were pretty thirsty when working hard.

Brian, a lot of it depends on the type of ground you will be working. If it ground that hasn't been worked before it will pull harder but you likely will get more traction on that type ground. Worked ground will pull easier but you will have more slippage. I have two 4020's and use axle mount duals on both of them. They have both been turned up (non-turbo) and either can easily pull my 22' 1010 field cultivator anywhere in 4th gear in any type of ground at a good depth. Both have 18.4-38's on them. Dual wheels are not expensive and would be well worth your time to put on, but if you are not going to run duals probably that 15' to 17' area would be about as big as you would want, at least around here in my area. Hope this helps. Mike

Thanks Mike, I think i'll invest in a set of hub mounts then. Everyone says they are better than clamp-ons. Thanks again

Whats the big difference between clamps and axle mounts. We have a 4020 w 18.4/38 clamps. this is a great loader tracor which we use it for.

My dad always claimed that you spread the weight of your tractor over a greater area which gave you more traction. Our 4640, 4450, and 4430 all have hub mounts. But I wouldn't be afraid to try clamp-mounts.
