I'm 19 years old and bought a 1971 4020 Diesel Syncro range and plan on farming with my Dad. It's a sharp looking tractor, runs great, but sometimes it will not go into reverse. If you put it in 5th, pull forward a little, then pull it back into reverse, it's fine. Is it the syncronizers in the tranny, or does the linkages need adjusted. Thanks for any help.

My 2510 has done that exact thing for years. I adjusted linkage a few years back but didn't seem to help much. I wouldn't worry too much about it other than just the inconvenience of the problem.
I assumed the rear end was going out, but like I say, mine has done this for years. I shift alot too because I use mine with a loader.

you should of course, adjust it first per tm, then, if the problem persists...
anyway, before adjusting, check for excessive play in the shift mechanism.

david.I wish to respectfully disagree,I think first, check out the wear in the shift quadrant, then adjust the linkage.if the bushinds are replaced in the quadrant, then, the linkage probably wont need adjusting.

Thats rat David start at the top and work down. That slot macine shifter has some bushings inside that when replaced and lubed up solve a lot of problems. Also check shifter rod adjustment as well. Seems that I remeber some detents on the right side behind the battery box also. It gets real expensive to go into one of these.
