Adjustment of sickel bar mower

I have an old IH industrial sickle mower. I need to know what is the best setting for a sickle mower bar. Should it be level, tipped forward or tipped backward slightly. I have been plaing with it and can't seem to get it right. It mows 10 acres of hay pretty well. The big trouble is in the grass or heavy hay. Lots of backing up to clear clogs on the bar.
Thanks

Mark

It should have a "grass board" at the end to dump the cut hay back into the row (otherwise it can fall into the uncut grass and clog the next time around).

If the clogs are at one spot along the bar you should make sure the knife is held close to the ledger plates there. Replacing the rock guards and sharpening the knife will probably help a lot.

Also, the knives should go the same distance either side of the guards. This is called register.

The sickle bar should be at a right angle to the center of the tractor. This is called lead.

Running a sickle bar a little nose up has always worked better for me that running it nose down.

If Case IH still has a manual for your mower, or one like it it'll help a bunch.

The guards should be level or tipped up slightly. At the extreme end of each stroke the sickle section should line up with the guard. The sections should be sharp as well as the guards. Anymore mower guards are either throw aways or have ledger plates which are replaceable. Guards do half of the cutting. Also the hold down clips and wear plates should be servicable so the sickle doesn't bounce around.
