Bought mt first tractor this winter..Case530 gas. Now springs comin' and I'm realizing I don't have the first idea how to prepare my field. Plan to plant food plots. Do I disc first...or plow? What kind of plow or disc is appropriate for this tractor? My soil is heavy clay and I'll be planting about 4 acres.

Rookie,
It will depend on where you are at, what you want to plant, & what is there now. I started a few years ago & am still learning what works best. I had a soil test done first thing to determine lime & fertilizer requirements. I was putting food plots in older established CRP ground in SE Iowa. Had some help & things are going pretty good now.

Thanks for your input. I'm in Michigan and the field is just overgrown weeds. I hear it was a corn field 20 yrs. ago. My main concern is that I don't completely understand exactly what the different implements can do or what my tractor can handle. I think I'm going to plant a commercial product for deer and turkeys. Thanks for the tip on the Ag. extension service...think I'll give them a shout.

I may have some pointers to share by trial & error but my ignorance shows pretty quick with the real farmers on this site. Give me a shout & swap stories. bjkpharmd@yahoo.com

Rookie,
I am just a few years into the deer food plots also. I have a 52 H and this is what I have been doing. The property that I own had been drilled for beans and corn. So the first thing I did is get a two bottom plow and turn it over to get rid of the hard pack. Because I still have not figured out how to plow the right way I plow in strips. I try to make them one ac strips because most seed is planted by the ac. Then I disk it down and then broadcast the whitetale clover and then cultiepack it down. Just bought a two row corn planter this winter and plan on planting some corn and pukins. The three implements I use most are the plow, disk, and broadcaster. Good luck and email me to let me know how you do. I also have loamy clay soil.

HB,
Not so sure what is funny about corn and punkins but the corn it for the deer. I leave it stand in the winter to feed the deer and the punkins are for my kids and grandkids. You should see the trails in the snow they come out of the woods and all lead to the corn. If there are any left overs the deer will take care of them.

The clover is whitetale clover and I am like the aint got a clue guy. I have just started farming and have tried different things.Am trying to stay away form the high priced seed. My land is in the middle of farm country so yes I am looking for something that also will be the ultmate food to bring them in. I planted winter wheat in some of the strips just to keep out the weeds. Used buckwheat also but deer did not seem to touch it but it kept the weed down and made good green manure. There are thousands of sites on the net to learn from. Where in michigan are you? I also am in michigan, Hillsdale.

Chuck,
Thanks for your help. My biggest concern is that I don't really understand all the implements and exactly what they'll do or what my tractor can do. I guess I just need to try a plow or a disk and learn through trial and error. I'm curious why you're switching from clover to corn and pumpkins. I have 3 farms bordering me and they plant corn, soy beans and alfalfa so the deer have plenty to choose from. I was hoping to plant something that they would prefer and go out of their way for. I was thinking clover or possibly one of those hybrid legumes (like the Tecomate product). Let me know what you think. Ron ( aka Rookie)
