I'm in need of a 6' finishing mower. I've been looking at the Sitrex and Rhino. I've only got about three acres to cut but only want to buy once. I can get the Sitrex for $1050.00 (decent price) and the Rhino FM for just under $1700.00, which isn't cheap I know. Any advice with these two mowers would be greatly appreciated!

Sitrex rear finishing mowers have been imported into Northern Ireland recently. Some are sold under their own name, others marketed by a long-established and respected local brand called Fleming. I have inspected them at a local dealer and can confirm that they are very heavy and solidly made. Dealers have been trying to demonstrate them but the weather has been so bad it's been impossible to say how good a finish they can give. They can cut long grass though.

Although it wasn't on your list, I have been using a 60" John Deere finishing mower for the past 5 years. I am very happy with it. It is three point mounted. It has height adjustment from 2 - 6 inches, and leaves a manicured look to the grass. It does not like long grass however. Anything over about 10 inches and it comes out pretty scruffy looking. Then I make a sceond pass the next day. But you can sure cover some ground with a six foot path mowing in third gear behind my S-MTA Farmall.

I bought a Woods rear discharge six footer and like it. I saw the Rhino about two weeks later and wished i had seen it earlier. That Rhino looks stout. Whatever you buy, grease it with the best grease money can buy. Grease is cheap, spindles aint!

Mike:

Know nothing about those two brands of finishing mowers. Have used and used hard for 10 years a Landpride 90" mower. If 72" is any thing like mine, you can't go wrong with Landpride.

For the past 10 years I have used an 871 Ford and a 6 foot Woods mower to mow our 10 acres. I think your 600 will have no problem with a 6 footer. I would also vote for the rear discharge in the new Woods model. Good luck. Roger Allgood

It's been awhile since I've done much checking on finishing mowers, but Woods used to be considered one of the better brands. HTH

Forgot to mention that I'm going to use it on a Ford Model 640, 31 hp. tractor. Is the 6' too much for the 640 to handle?

Don't know anything about the two brands you mention, but your tractor ought to be able to handle a 6-footer. I mow with a 6-foot King Kutter finish mower behind a 2N and only have trouble if the grass is WAY longer than it should be (a foot or so). Even then, the mower starts cutting way too ragged to be acceptable well before the tractor bogs down.

Look for a model with rear instead of side discharge and you'll be able to run 6' easily and maybe even 7'. With rear discharge, the grass is eliminated behind each blade instead of being moved across each blade to the side opening. Safer too as everything is discharged rearwards. These models have just recently become available and you may have to look around to find them.
