Has anybody had any luck with cutting hay with a modified brush hog with one side of the box removed? Any other tips? Thanks!

My Woods brand brush hog's side can be unbolted. I like the job the cutter does better with the side left on, so i no longer unbolt it. I have a NH 451 sickle mower, but here in W. Mi. you need to "condition" the hay, not just mow it. With hay prices so low here, ($1.50 per bale) i use my brush hog instead of buying a mower/conditioner that would be too costly for a decent one. I tried it once when the haybine was broke and didn't like it ,it chewed up the grass pretty bad and didn't cut clean for me . I personally prefer a sickle trail mower but I use a IH 1190 mowditioner
used to have an IH 990 till the wife found a stump at full throttle on a 140 hp tractor. I have a massey ferguson sickle that'll cut anything .I'd like to try out a disk mower but will wait till a neighbor gets one

The bush hog 300 series mowers could be bought with a removable side and a "catching" device to catch the hay. Friend has one and has used it to mow hay claims it works good. You can still buy the 300 series new but they have dropped the removable side feature
