Dad and I have this homemade sprayer unit we use to spray electric fence rows with roundup each year to keep the weeds down. We've been using this for several years without a problem. Last year we had a tough time loosing prime in the pump. Sometimes it would take a minute to get it back. We have an "end of the hose filter" on the pick-up line stuck in the 55 gallon drum. I think we're getting too much foam in the barrel from the return hose that's off the regulator and need to add some sort of antifoam solution to the mixture. Any suggestions? The roller pump is about 8 yrs old. We clean the pump each year real well and add some motor oil to the pump in the hose for storage. Could something in the pump be starting to deteriorate and make it loose prime?

Thanks in advance for the help,
Tyman

Tyler, looking at your setup it looks like you are sucking out of the top of the barrel, as rollers get worn they will suck air around the shaft'(s) IMHO I would put a fitting in the BOTTOM of the barrel and almost gravity feed that pump, use a barrel with a removeble lid so you can get inside to make a thru wall fitting connection outlet to the pump you can still use your filter tween' the barrel and pump I'll bet that will solve your foaming . luck Geo.

Thanks George!!

Guess I'd better go back to the steel barrel.

Tyler, I built my sprayer out of a 250 g. drum .with a hypro roller pump.
The first time I used it I had foaming problems so I relocated my return line from the pressure regulator to the bottom of the tank so as not "aireate"(sp)the mixture. That cured the foaming. I have sprayed most everything in the way of herbacides for the last 18yrs. with that setup and haven't had a problem with foaming they say not to use a steel tank with some chemicals yet I have had no problems I wash it out good when I'm finished and spray used motor oil in the tank for over winter storage and also fill the pump and turn it over a few times to prevent rust. I just put a qt. of old oil in my paint spray gun and coat it good inside

Don't know much about foaming, but I have worked on a few of those roller pumps. They are relatively high volume (15gpm) low pressure (200psi or so), but are not positive displacement. So they might not like to prime themselves. The pumps also had a tendency to bypass internally around ends of the rollers as they got older, losing efficiency. Rebuilding them never seemed to put them back to new output. We even tried to resurface the end plate and pump body to remove some of the clearance, but that had a marginal effect. You might try to move the suction line to the bottom, or near the bottom of the tank, that should help prime the pump. Also make sure the suction line is not kinked somewhere or has some other obstruction (plugged inlet filter??)

We spray alot of Roundup every year on our soybeans and always have trouble with foaming. I'd almost bet the foam is causing your trouble. You should be able to pick up some antifoam at a local farm store in the sprayer department. Good Luck.

try using a special solution for anti- foaming very cheap too, borrow some laundry fabric softner from the MRS but don't hang around the house too long or she will teach you how to use a washer and dryer
