Looking for a tandem equip. trailer to tow behind my pickup. Still looking for used, but saw several ads (Hudson, Hurst, etc.) for 7500 lb, 8000 lb, for around $1600 w/ one axle brakes. Could add another axle (brakes) for $75-$100. These are 6.5-7 x 16 ft. One of the ads says length can be added for $100 per foot. I was thinking that a 7 ft x 18 ft would be perfect for my needs. Are these good deals?

make sure to go tandem axle.....use these axles to take weight of your pickup (ie center your load over them).

Thanks, guys. Guess I'll keep looking. ** BFO ** you wouldn't comment on quality of Hudson, Hurst publicly. I assume that means you don't think much of them. Would you please email me to elaborate? Thanks.

i've got a 16' hudson with flat deck inside the finders. i'm happy with the length, but not with the width of the deck. every tractor i've picked up so far could not be loaded forward because the rear wheels would not pass the fenders. and the fenders are not strong enought for the tractor to roll over without damage. i wish i had two brake axles instead of one. make sure the trailor jack will not hit the truck tailgate when turning sharply. i replaced two tailgates before replacing my jack. yes you think you'll be carefull but one night you'll forget and ruin your tailgate. its nice to have a jack strong enought to lift the rear of the truck. that way you can make the tail end of the trailor squat down to make loading easer. i think wood decking is better than steel (too noisey, too slippery). i added a receiver near the front to hold a removable electric winch and two army mortar cans to hold straps, chain, tackle and binders. added binding rings to the sides to give positive tie points. sorry to run on but pulling a trailor you like gives you comfort and confidence, pulling one you don't like is a horror story or worse. oh by the way when you get a trailor you like, do not lend it out.

I am currently using a 20' 5th wheel with a 4' dove tail for equip. Have been well satisfied. 2-7500 axles, brakes on both (though don't always need or use them). Cost $3800 new. Good for general hauling though I use a 28' for hay most of the time (it's too awkward for equip).I do agree with the others, you are better off to have brakes on both axles of a tandem. Doing without puts a lot of strain on truck brakes.I've loaded up to 16200 an not had any trouble, make sure the frame is heavy enough for the axles.

Just curious, what is the empty weight of your 20' trailer? Is that 16,200 the combined weight of the trailer and its load, or just the load?

16200 is payload, Case 2090, rears full of fluid, double weight racks on the front, and iron weights on rear. Trailer is extra. Combo runs about 20K

Wow, that's quite a load; I'm assuming that at 7500 lbs. the axles are not duals. What size tires are you running on it?? Thanks for the info.

singles, 16" heaviest radials I can buy 90-110 psi. Please note: I don't recommend overloading as much as I sometimes do. On my long trailer (tandem 8000's; 28' with 6'deck on the neck) I've gone 25000 tare, 29800 gtw with alfalfa. It gets hard to steer (pulling with an '01 Dodge HD 3/4 ton; I've got a '75 Ford dually that takes the weight but it doesn't have as good of brakes as the Dodge) and I sure wouldn't put either one this heavy on the interstates. KY DOT pretty much ignores you with farm plates as long as you are not speeding and stay off the Interstates. Would never consider these kind of loads except on a 5th wheel.

I won't comment on the quality of those trailers, but definately put brakes on EVERY axle, to do otherwise is just plain dangerous.

I agree with BFO on both parts.
