Another silly question????

I've got a 9n and am looking for some kind of wagon to pull behind me. I'd primarily use it for basic farm clean up, hauling firewood, picking up debris and stuff like that. I don't want one that's too big to handle either. Any suggestions on what size, 2 or 4 wheel, and how it would attach to my tractor, and if this is something that I buy or build?
Thanks for the help.

One thing to consider is to buy a highway-legal trailer say of the size mentioned by Paul . You can then use it behind a car or pickup. I used to own land about 150 miles from where I live. I built a trailer just big enough to haul my Farmall Cub with my pickup. When I arrived at my land I used the same trailer behind the Cub for hauling wood , brush, rocks , etc. Just a thought. John

I use a standard 4x8 utility trailer, single axle, homebuilt with a 2" ball hitch. I haul it behind a 1938 Farmall F14. You should hitch it to the drawbar, but it can be hitched to a tool bar on the three point as well. It holds plenty of the sort of thing you mentioned, handles and backs well, and can be licensed for the road and hauled behind a car or small pickup.

The link below will take you to a picture of the one I have as an example

Paul, thanks for the advice, but what is a tool bar? I've got a draw bar ( the thing w/ all the holes in it,right?) but it rotates in the 3pt hitch. How do I attach the trailer to it?

Okey-dokey, we got a little terminology problem is all. What you call a drawbar that goes in your three point is what I call a tool bar. To me, a draw bar is something permanently attached to the tractor, usually bolted underneath the rear end, and may swing a few degrees left or right, and can be pinned in place so as not to swing. Don't have a good picture handy, hope that explaination works for ya.

You COULD just screw the ball through the centermost hole on the drawbar that goes into the three point, and the action of clamping the trailer hitch onto it would keep the drawbar from rotating much. I'd have reservations about pulling very much weight though, as I'd be afraid the ball would pull out of the trailer hitch. It would be best if you could secure the drawbar somehow so it didn't rotate when hauling the trailer. The advantage of having it hooked to the three point is that you can raise the front of the trailer and get a little dumping action.

For heavy loads, I'd recommend hooking it to the permanent drawbar, if your tractor has one.

I can also arrange a picture of a hitch I built to go on the three point of my John Deere 750 that uses the top link of the three point to keep the ball from rotating. Email me if you want a picture of it with rough dimensions.

If your going to build a trailer just put a clevis hitch on it. Easy, safe and will work with tool bar.

Now, why didn't I think of that? So simple, it plumb evaded me.

This works good. I cut the worn out ball hitch off my little "junk" trailer and welded on two flat pieces and cut a hole through both of them. I can pin it to a drawbar, toolbar, lawntractor, truck bumper, whatever. I wouldn't pull it down the highway but this trailer never goes on the road so I don't worry about it and it's alot handier than the ball hitch.

I have the swinging drawbar that you described on my 8N: Unfortunately, Central Tractor's catalog does not list one for the 9N or 2N. I did not find the toolbar satisfactory: It rotates too much. Ford originally sold brackets that hooked to the toolbar and lift arms to keep it from rotating. You could probably fabricate these from metal rods (heat it with a torch and make the appropriate bends in the rod). I have seen a 3 pt. hitch like you use: That would be perfect for the 9N.
