I am going to buy a round baler this summer
an I would like to know things to look for and
any recomendations as to which baler that I
might need. I am wanting a good used baler
that easy to operate and that I could bale with
a MF 175. I only want to bale about 100 bales
a year. Also what do I need to expect it to cost. Thanks for any advise.

If your baling only 100 /year you will want to go with something cheap, and low maintanence. An older chain type newholland would probably be a good bet, but make sure that there is still life left in the chains. With the exception of the main overhead chains, maintenance and repairs are easy, and these balers are almost indestructable.....yet very effective. The belt bailers are also quite good, but if you are potentially going to be picking up sticks, etc., they are not quite as durable. Case also makes a very good belt type round bailer....Price will obviosly vary with age, but do not spend over 10,000 on a used bailer...you may be able to find an adequate one for only a couple thousand. The danger you run is a cheap one may soon nead very expensive repairs...namely bearings, etc.....If u do get a chain bailer with a lot of use on it, you can simply patch it up (holes may wear in floor with extensive use). this is an easy process. I guess my best advise is buy something you can get parts for....and CHECK THE BEARINGS< CHAINS< AND OTHER MOVING PARTS for excessive wear. If it looks good, it probably is.

You might want to consider a fixed chambered baler(Krone, M&W, ect.) since HP requirements are low. There are about 1/3 less moving parts in a fixed chambered chain type baler versus a variable chamber belt baler, so upkeep is much simpler. There is less dust and since the chambers are almost totally enclosed less leaf lost from the hay you are baling. Also they are designed with open throats which allow much easier starting of the bale core. Good luck.

For 100 bales a year, hiring it done will be much cheaper, if someone is available. In my area, any round baler for under $4000 isn't worth a look, and most under $6000 aren't either. Stay with a 4'X4' bale with your 175.

I agree but if you do buy one make sure you have a local dealer. The new holland chain balers were good but cost a small fortune to repair. Belts for the other brands are also expensive.
