Adjusting the knotter brake

I've read a lot of posts about the knotter brake adjustment lately. How do I know when the brake is adjusted properly? I have a N.H. super 78. When I rotate the needles into the chamber by hand, I can feel resistance from the brake but I don't know for sure if there is enough. I haven't had any shearbolts break on the flywheel yet but I really don't want to that problem to appear. Is there a certain tightness I need to get or do I have to hope for the best? Also, how important is it to have the needle rub the twine disc? The Right side needle doesn't touch and I've not had any problem with it not tying. The left needle is where the manual says it should be and I get knots hanging up on the billhook. What gives? Thanks for your support. Denny in Il.

Denny I'll try to answer what parts I can.

The needle should miss the twine disc by about 1/8". The needle should very lightly touch the knotter frame. Not drag, just lightly touch.

About the most common causes of the twine hanging in the bill hooks are:

1. Rough spots or burrs worn down into lips on billhook.

2. Dull knife

3. Knife lift arm out of adjustment and dragging on the bill hooks back.

4. Too much tension on the twine.

There should be some long springs with adjustment bolts through them on the knotter brake caliper.

With the baler sitting there idle and all the knotters and needles at the home position take ahold of the rod that goes to the brake. See if you can move the knotter brake by hand pressure. If the brake disc will move any at all by hand the brake needs tightened. If it does'nt move at all the brake is fine.

For absolute adjustment of the brake you need to get a book on the bailer of course. But if the brake is too loosetheneedles won't return completely home breaking the flywheel bolt.If too tight yuo will sheer the bolt at the knotter drive.Afothe knot hanging on the billhooks look for rust and spacing adjustment at billhook and wiper arm.Hope this helps.Jerry A.
