Hi Guys,

I finally got this old hay rake drug home this afternoon and am trying to get it ready for the field.

I can't find anywhere to check or add oil to that gearbox. There appears to be a wormgear backlash adjustment on top and it looks like it has had a wrench on it recently.

Does anyone out there own a Hesston hay rake and can tell me how to oil this thing?

Thanks,

Allan

That"s similar to the Superior gearboxes I"ve got on my spinner spreader. It also has a Superior worm gear on the apron chain. They are precision machined in such a way that there is no gasket between the two halves and no shims on the bearings. I pulled a u joint yoke off and pulled the shaft and all out. Just took it apart replaced the shaft and retaining ring and put it back together. I"ve spread a 1000 tons since so it must be right.

Probably like the gearbox on my JD swather. It has a bented plug like that and the oil level is supposed to be 2 to 2 1/2 inch below the hole. Don't know what yours should be. Probably enough to cover gears inside.

Like an ol' squirrel, I agree that I'd first look at the big nut.

I marvel at the guy down the road with his irrigated alfalfa. He mows it with a double sickle setup, and then uses a 40'+ Rowse Dump Rake to windrow it. Seems to get it done in no time flat, rain or shine.

PS: If everything else fails, I see there is a new 3 tine pitchfork on eBay for 168.00!

Just looking at the 4th picture down, looks like the bigger nut has been backed off before. Here in the south we raked the alfalfa at night or early morning while covered with dew. Also baled the same way.

I agree with old art. That is not a worm gear box. I believe the plug in the middle used to have a vent on it and some one plugged it.

If you take a wrench to the big part of the plug, and a wrench on the small part, if they turn seperately very easily, it could be an adjust ment. For what I dont know. But if they are tight to each other, and want to come out as one piece, it is really likely that it is just a plug for adding lube.

My 2 cents.

I have a Gehl 2140 mowco with a plug like that ontop of the gear box, real pain to get to but I guess it works. ( I thought it was pretty crazy too when I saw in sitting there.

Alan,
Looking at the 3rd picture the tube with the 90 degree bend. Looks like it has a plug on the end that has had a wrench on it.

Maybe you7 got one of them junk gear boxes with the life time lube set up and it has no place to check it. And if you did them it was made to brake down after so many hours/years of work. Yep I'm telling it right and they did make them that way and you can't check them.

Allan,

Have you had the nut off? Are you sure the plug there does not have a dip stick in it?

I noted the difficulty of checking oil in the gearbox of a finish mower.(For you out there in the dry country a finish mower is a light duty, three bladed rotary cutter for mowing lawns) Anyway, when I asked the salesman about it he said the company had decided that they had more problems with people leaving plugs out and losing oil so they were going to treat the gearbox as a sealed unit and assume the box would last as long as the rest of the mower.
Maybe thats the case with that Hesston. It looks like an aluminum gear box BTW.

Another question. Will a wheel rake cause too much leaf loss in alfalfa?

Hi Keith,

No, haven't had it off yet; scared to pull it out of there if it is a backlash adjuster. :>(

There is almost "no" leaf loss in alfalfa if you rake it right. Out here, we have to rake it when it is just "wilted" and do the baling when the dew is down.

that gear box has both shafts on the same level so it a ring and pinion gear not a worm drive .
