Chewed up the bronze worm gear on my Sears snowblower
and I'm finding out that they are not available through the typical avenues. Anybody have any suggestions where I could find a replacement.
Snowblower # is 536.918200 and the bronze gear # is 50223.
Thanks

Hi Ron,

I"m replying to your need for this brass gear. I have the exact same machine with the exact same problem. I"ve followed the threads here but am curious how you came out...what part you used...etc.

Please Advise.

Dan :)

It is made by Murray. It is been discontinued. You might start looking for some old Murray dealers.

Gear may have a replacement P/N. try Jacks Small Engines and do the parts lookup thing. So far as matching the gear up, they may be able to help you with another suitable replacement. Bronze gear against a steel one suggests that it was the sacrifical one against a non-hardened steel gear. Remember that Sears doesn"t make anything it sells. There is a supplier out there like AYP or MTD that made that machine for them. Lots of searching can pay off. You may have to buy the whole gear box.

Good luck

Ron
Had the same thing, neighbor's kids ran it without grease. Got most of the parts direct from Sears, but 1 seal & 1 bearing had to get from NAPA.
Works now, waiting for them to pick up machine.
Sears.com has good web site. Follow the prompts, type in model number, then look for parts picture & listing. P.S. They brought it to me with bad engine, had about a spoonful of oil, stuck. If they had mentioned that the auger didn't work,I wouldn't have put on new engine & had to figure the rest out. Would have just saved the tires & junked the rest.

Did that, your are right thought Sears does make it easy to get parts, in this case the gear was discontinued. The bronze gear seems like the weak link. I much rather have a steel gear and a aluminmum key. I not sure how to match up the gear.

I have the same blower and went through the same repair due to the floor model having grade 2 instead of shear bolts. I have found 2 gears which might work you will have to measure. www.lawnandgardenparts.com, in site search type worm gear a pictute and measurements looks a lot like the one I replaced. Its a MTD 717-0528. LOL link below

Thanks. I am on that same track now. Which bolts are you taking about, the two that attach the auger to the shaft? By the way did you use that gear or were you lucky and Sears still carried the part.

The shear bolts are bolts which have a groove cut in 2 places to weaken the bolt and will shear. These are available at any dealer or even at ACE hardwares. There is one on each side of the augers visible and replaceable from the front of the thrower. I was lucky and sears had the part[22 yrs ago]. As was mentioned I was maid by other makers. The MTD could work if measurments are right also jackssmallengines.com has a Murray brass worm gear its worth a call. Mine is 25 yrs old looks and runs like new.
