Recently acquired a Ford garden tractor (freebie) but it needs a new crankshaft. Mechanical buddy of mine says its too worn and flattened for machining (will need to be resized 20,000th). Says I can buy I new crank (too expensive) or replace with a short block. Any advice or tips out there? Good deal on a crankshaft? Good deal on a replacement

If your std shaft size is 1.499 to 1.500 Use a N-62 continental rod brg, bore your rod to fit, file for brg tang. 10,20,30, undersize Clevite # is CB 524. Federal use to make .040 and .060 semi bore to size. Bore rod on bridgeport to 1.622 then hone to 1.624--1.6245. Have saved a lot of them .

Hey Earl, Thanks for that info, didn't know there was a bearing that close to the Kohler size.

Thanks for the info, to you guys who replied. I think I will try try resizing to .0020, as discussed at Link (thanks BCA). I was led to believe there were no bearing inserts for that size but now see there are some options. Will pursue some of the other excellent suggestions (ie, build-ups, etc) if the bearing insert route does not pan out

Another route you can take is have the crank machined a little at a time after the first .010 until it is round, then have the new .010 rod shaved and the big end resized. I have had it done on three of my engine and they are working great. They ended up between .014 to .017 undersized.

Thanks for the offer Carl. Will take you up on the offer if going the oversized bearing route does not work out... if you still have it at that point. You can email me at adunic@sd8.bc.ca.

I have one in the shop with the same problem , a good machine shop will grind it -20 then use a automotive bearing on the rod ---- it works well and will save $$$$$$$$$$$ . have fun .

A good shop with the right equipment can build it up and regrind to std. I got a K321 crank in now for that. Cost less than fitting the rod with a bearing insert.
