Cub Cadet 1541 hydro question

I recently purchased a cub 1541 and have a question about the hydro unit. When I am going forward up any significant incline, I must push the control lever to the maximum position to move and even then progress is minimal and the tranmission "complains" with a rather loud noise. On the level or in reverse, even going up hill, no problems. I did some research and found that on the older cubs there are two valves accessible on the top of the hydro unit, one for forward and one for reverse. One way to troubleshoot this problem would be to switch these valves, and if the problem moves (Forward to Reverse) with the valve then that is likely the problem.

I have these valves on my 1250 cub, but the unit on the 1541 is different. Is there something similar that is accessible on the 1541 without tearing it apart? Is this job doable by a resonably competent amature? 2 years ago I did remove the hydro unit from my 1250 and replaced all the gaskets so the actual removal of the unit doesn't bother me. Any other suggestions? Thanks for any ideas, Jim
