if it is a manual trans, it is either a 106 or 107.

if it is a hydrostatic trans, it is a 147 hydro

Hey just for the record, on 3-digit IH Cub Cadet model numbers, the first 2 digits are the hp, the third is the drive. If even, it is a gear drive. If odd, a hydro. So for example, a 106 is a 10 hp gear drive, 107 is a 10 hp hydro.

A 147 is a 14 hp hydro.

Hi, Steve: Okay let's begin with the site that I just posted. If you go to their technical information site there will be a wealth of info about serial number location(s) on Cub Cadets. The 38.... number has R1 after it. This is the casting number of that particular part. Your engine will tell a lot about the engine however someone may have changed engines. I reccomend this site as a beginning in your journey to find out more about your Cub Cadet. I am assuming that there is no model number on the hood and even if there were sometimes hoods have been put on from other models. Your overall design will be the most help. This is where the site I listed will have info on the serial number location. Here is also one more site with some more info on serial number breakdown.
