Had a significant leak from the hydrostatic drive toward the end of the summer and I figured there was a bad seal on the input shaft. Removed the seat and cowling and found a LOT of grass/dirt accumulation all over the unit, top to bottom. Cleaned the unit and ran up and down the driveway with it a few times to determine where the leak was coming from. Oil began to pool at the top of the hydrostatic unit from two small pin holes located in what looks to be some kind of breather or relief valves (1 pin hole on each "valve"). Didn't see any other leaks. Not yet sure if this is the only source of the leak, but it appears to be a good starting place. Does someone know why this might be happening?

Kenny thanks for the o-ring info but, any idea where to find the back-up ring? And if I read you right are you saying there are 2 o-rings and not one!The cubb I'm working on only has 1 o-ring per valve! And also ever seen the tops of the valves welded across where the pin hole or release was? Thanks for any info,Chris

Those valves on top are what the lever pushes down to release pressure so you can push the tractor. I removed my lever as it caused them to leak like yours. I removed mine and cleaned and found one stuck down some. Replacments are costly! Try cleaning first, but use caution as has to be spotlessly clean to put back in and don't allow crud to fall in holes. Clean outside good first. Use Brakleen product to clean and blow off the crud, yet dries fast. Mine leaks where the front pump mounts to the axle, it's also on top front. It just has a cheapie cork gasket between it and not much of a clamping force on it. This is a common problem on Cadets. I changed mine, and it was good for a month and now leaks worse than before! I had to remove the rear assembly out from tractor to get at it and install gasket. It runs down rear case and drips off the bottom of castings between axles. Fun, Huh? I'ld talk to an Cadet dealer or someone who's worked on the older ones before diving in on the fix.

G.L,
Thanks for the details G.L. With those small pin holes in the top, appears that the unit was designed for a certain amount of oil relief, just seems excessive. From your note appears that I need to clean exterior well and then those valves are threaded can be turned out with a wrench. I'll ask for some advise from the Cadet dealer as you suggested. Good luck with your unit's leak. Sounds like a stubborn problem... and I hate to just live with oil leaks. Collects dirt and makes a mess. Appreciate your help.

Those valves are the second design relief valves and don't use a lever, they are self relieving, hence, no lever on your Quiet Line tractor. You can remove them with a socket or wrench. Clean them good so that all the gook is out of them. Replace the two O-rings on each unit with a new size 016 (lower) and 116 (upper) O-ring. Don't damage the nylon backup ring that is on there, they are scarf joint cut, you can remove them if you are careful.
Good Luck, Kenny

Thanks for the advise Kenny. This is exactly the information that I was hoping to learn. If "016" and "116" refer the o-ring size, what unit of measure is this? Do you know whether Motion Industries will recognize the two numbers you provided as replacement sizes? I'm just learning, so appreciate the help.

Parker Hannifan uses 2-016 and 2-116 as their full designation, but any hose/hydraulic place will know when you say size 16 and size 116 O-rings. Motion is a large Bearing/Power Transmission distributor, they will know what you mean. Good Luck, Kenny
