Hello to all. I am a rookie on this board, and I have some questions for anyone familiar with the Cub Cadet 149 tractors. Sat. afternoon I stopped at some tractor/implement dealers looking to find one of the IH Cub Cadets in the "Used Corral". One dealer had one out back ( a 149 Hydro-the rest were post IH Cadets). I am "presuming" that the 149 didn't run, (the dealer was closed) but it did have a battery under the seat, that was flipped up, it seemed to be complete, had a mower deck (48") that looked great, all the tires were up and had good tread (turf), and the tractor didn't look like it had too rough of a life. Now for the questions.
1-What is the going rate for a 149 in this condition that doesn't run?
2-If the engine needs rebuilt, what's a ballpark price for that?
3-How good was the hydro in these tractors? Any normal, and or, major problems to watch out for?
4-If it does run what is a decent price to pay?

Thanks for any info,or advice.

I'm not sure about the market value of this tractor but I've seen them sell in the $500 to $800 range for a running unit. I can tell you from experience that it is a very durable machine and very reliable. My dad purchased one new in 1973 ( still has it) to maintain a 5 acre property and move boats and trailers in our storage facility. We' ve also used it for years in a lawn service and snow plowing business. It had seven different operators, 10 sets of mower blades, 2 snow blowers and thousands of hours operating time in the last 29 years. In that time we did 2 valve jobs and 1 rebuild on the engine. We did those ourselves and as I recall the parts were not to expensive. It had 3 starter generator rebuilds and one replacement along with three batteries. We've never had a problem with the hydrostatic transmission, it seems to be the most durable component of a very reliable machine.

It always starts and runs smoothly. This is a good lawn tractor with the durability farm tractor. It's easy to work on also. If the unit you are looking at looks like it was not abused I would not be afraid to purchase it and put it to use. Tom

Thanks for the info Tom. I will have to have my wife call the dealer this week and ask about it, hopefully I'll get next Saturday off as well so I can go and check it out further. Thanks again for the help.
