Bought this 1720 used and it had it's fair share of use before me. It's been reliable until today. Was mowing and the tractor stopped with the hydro drive handle in forward position. I pulled slide handle back to nuetral position and the tractor continued to run by the primary drive belt on the engine pulley began to smoke as the tractor would not move.

Took off central cover plate and all of the drive linkages are still in place and working the transaxle, but no movement front/backwards. Drive belt was extremely tight.

Any ideas as to problem??

Belt melted before I could get the unit shut down and belt is no longer on unit. Engine fires and runs fine. Used hydro "dump valve" and pushed the tractor around to garage. transaxle fan and drive pulley was spinning when pushing the tractor. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The hydro pump on the transaxle is separate and rebuildable for less than $20.00 in parts (MTD has a kit). Getting to the pump is a bit of trouble and requires lowering the axle from the frame to access all bolts. But there is hope for this unit.

Sounds like you lunched the hydro...locked it up.

not likely. these pumps are built extremely tough and are quite rebuildable. they are not sealed as someone stated earlier on here and there is no filter because of the small reservoir design. it take about 15 minutes to remove the pump from the transaxle and about 10 minutes to open it and another 15 minutes to rebuild it after you get the parts. It's an extremely simple and tough design. the likelyhood of ever 'lunching' one of these is almost nil. seals are about the only thing that would ever wear out and they cost less than 20 bucks from the cub dealer ($17.00 to be exact). the seals only keep the fluid inside the unit and really don't affect the performance, though.
