I have a Cub Cadet 86. The serial # off the tag reads 2050042U421732. this does not correspond to anything I can find on this tractor. This # was stamped on a tag on the rear axle housing, is there another place I should be looking

You did not say what you are finding or looking for on the tractor, but the numbers you listed would be the correct numbers. The 205 is the "Kind Code" and means Cub Cadet, 0042 is a code used by IH to identify the model, the "U" means it was built in the USA, the 421732 is the serial number, and it was built the last week of Jan 1972. The model 86 was part of the series of 86, 108,109, 128, 129, 149, 169 models, that for the most part were built from 9/71 to 10/74. S/N range was from 400001 to 529811 for the series.

421732 looks like it was made January, 1972. See the attached link and check for yourself. And join us at the IH Registry Cub Cadet Forum, www.ihregistry.com/discus...it is all entirely free!
