The Kohler K301A spec# 47138B motor in my cub cadet threw a rod! Does anyone know of any other motors that will fit into this tractor? Or of any place to pick up a new K301A motor or shortblock at a reasonable price?
Thanks

They didn't have a 12hp and the 14hp I figured, would not have to work as hard. Yes you do have to mount the fuel tanl bracket under some head bolts, you will have to retorque the head, not a problem. It's also a black engine, I painted mine with Cadet yellow to keep it looking stock. The Cadet yellow thins with mineral spirits thinner so you can shoot it with a paint sprayer, just give it about three weeks to dry.

I also went with a new 14 h.p. from Tulsa engine warehouse, and could'nt be happier. It will swap in in place of the 12 h.p. no problem. Just swap the p.t.o. clutch, and the motor side of the drive clutch, and connect the fuel line. Starter /generator bolts right on. Don't forget to locktite the engine hold down bolts. The oil pan is only aluminum, so don't overtighten. It may seem like a lot of money(mine was $978.00 shipped to the company I work at), but your 125 is a lot more garden tractor than those dime store plastic disposable units for sale nowadays. Replace the motor and use it another 30+ years. Can't say how much longer those old Kohlers will be available.

Hello Ron, I just went through this exact same replacement with the 125 I'm restoring right now. I suggest you replace the 12hp with a 14hp from www.tulsaenginewarehouse.com Or search "Google" under Tulsa Engine Warehouse, once there click on the Kohler icon and locate the 14hp for a Cub Cadet. Without shipping I paid under $1000.00 for one, it comes with the starter/generator bracket, muffler, carburetor, front & rear pulley, it's ready to just bolt in a go. On rebuilding, you'll most likely find the cranks connecting rod journal is egg shaped from years of thrust loading. Being a hollow crank, this is common.

Why did you guys go with a 14hp instead of the 12hp? Is the 14hp a better motor or did you just want more power?
Also how did you attach the muffler and fuel tank brackets back on? Did you loosen all of the head bolts and start over retorqueing them?

Ron, I'm guessing as to their motives for 14 hp. But if you do some checking, you will find you can get the 14 new for almost the same money as the 12 new. It's cheap added hp.
