check the linkage to the bypass (between your legs on the floor) and the bypass valve on the pump itself. it's a simple plunger with a spring behind it inside the pump. the plunger and spring can be removed by turning the nut holding it in place and inspected/cleaned/repaired if needed. There are also two ball valves at rear of pump which are held in place by long plugs and springs. if not seated one or both of these could cause the same problem. the heads are located on the steel portion of the pump (not the cast aluminum) and have 1/4" hex (allen) heads. the way the pump is built you would hear any internal problems with the pump long before it ever stopped pumping so the likelyhood of that being the problem is nill.

The hydro pump is removable fromt the transaxle and rebuildable for around $20.00 with a kit that MTD sells. (MTD is the owner of Cub Cadet). The kit contains seals, o rings, etc. Don't throw the tractor away. Rebuild the pump.

There are a couple of possibilities:
1. There are release valves that allow the tractor to be pushed for short distances with the engine off. If one of the valves is stuck open, it would keep the power from going to the wheels. You may be able to get them to unstick by running the engine speed up and then quickly moving the hydro lever from forward to reverse and back a few times. Hang on tight in case it decides to grab!

2. If you have a plugged filter on the transmission, it might be restricting the flow of hydraulic fluid. When's the last time you changed the fluid and filter?

3. You may have a shear pin that has sheared off somewhere in the driveline. Check to make sure the shaft going into the hydro pump is spinning the same speed as the engine shaft.

Hope this helps!

Bob,tractor will move, but not very fast in forward and reverse and stops if going up hill.
Hydro is a sealed unit,no filter.Tractor is free wheeling when stopped and brake doesn't work when
in park.Thanks

Hydro pump is removable and is not sealed. Once you remove the pump you will see the hex head bolts that hold the pump together. These heads face the transaxle so you can't see them unless you remove the pump. Once taken apart all parts are readily available from your cub dealer. There is a rebuild kit for less than $20.00.

CC 1720 had one of those "disposable" transmissions if I remember right. Can't claim to be an expert on this model, but I think it's a Peerless or some such brand like is used in the cheaper grades of lawn tractors. If one of those breaks, yer supposed to replace it. Usually it spells the end for the machine, as the transmission is higher than the value of the unit.

WRONG!!! Unit is completely rebuildable. NOT DISPOSABLE!!! Parts are much cheaper than new tractors.

The unit is hydro and the pump is quite rebuildable for less than $20.00 with the rebuild kit from the dealer. Don't trash the unit. Fix it!!

Hmmmm... Scratch head... Hmmmmm...

Unfortunately, I'm not an expert on these tractors, I'm trying to figure out what might be happening based on my experience with my Cub Cadet 1811. I don't know the complete list of differences between the 1720 and the 1811 so some of my ideas may not apply to your tractor.

Here's a couple more thoughts that I have had:
1. Follow the linkages from the Forward/Reverse handle back to the transmission. Somewhere in the linkage there will be a spring that isolates the transmission from the shift lever. The spring may be gone or the assembly might be worn out. Check out this website (follow the links for "more information" until you've read it all.):
Link

2. You stated that there is no transmission filter on your tractor. I don't know the Cub Cadet tractor line real well, but I've never seen a Cub Cadet hydro without a filter. Even if it doesn't have a filter, have you checked the fluid level and condition? It should be changed periodically because hydraulic fluid tends to absorb moisture and will eventually get enough crud built up to start causing problems.

3. You may want to check out the Cub Cadet forum on Yahoo groups. There are quite a few people there that know more than I do... Here's the link:
Link
It's free to join and you can learn a bunch!

4. Your brake problem may be independent of the forward/reverse problem. Do you have external or internal brakes? External brakes can be seen next to the rear tires. It's a setup that looks like disc brakes on a car. Internal brakes are inside the differential housing and can only be seen if you take the plate off of the differential. I would check the linkages from the brake pedal back to the brake assemblies to see if you can find a broken link or one that can be adjusted.

Whew! I'm gettin' long winded here...

Hope this helps!

That's right there is no filter. There isn't even a drain plug in this unit. To replace the fluid you need to remove the pump completely and drain from the fill hole in top. The good news is while you've got it out you can rebuild the pump with the kit that the dealer sells. All other parts are replaceable as well if needed. The kit contains mostly rubber o rings and seals which wear out and leak through causing loss of power. If you think you are going to be able to replace the unit for less than the cost of fixing it you are wrong. Like any piece of machinery, this unit requires maintenance and repair from time to time. If you trash things that you can fix, then you must have more money than most.

I have a 1988 model 1720. I added a small spring to re-enforce the spring on the transaxle Idler pulley.
Otherwise I had the same symptoms, like a slipping clutch in a car. I also buy belts 1 inch less than spec'd.

Have you dumped this thing? I need a new pump since a spline shaft is mostly worn off. I've been replacing the brass couplers between pump & transaxle for a few years. I replaced the transaxle about 8 years ago.
