I have a 6 year old Cub model 2185 with 48" deck and for some reason I'm destroying PTO belts (3 this year). I assume that I may have a bearing going out on a deck spindle. Has anyone rebuilt a deck, and can you provide a cost estimate for having it done ? This would inlcude all bearings, pulleys, springs, etc. Thanks.

I just bought a used 2185 with a 48 inch deck and the gentleman i got i from had a cub cadet guy tell him to place a small block of wood in a certain spot on the deck. I can take a snap shot and e-mail it to any intertested. He said once he put the block in place he did not have any more belt problems. I plan on leaving it in place as well.

I've got to decide whether to purchase a new 48" deck, or have my current deck completely rebuilt. My Cub dealer quoted a new deck for around $900. Anybody have any idea as to what it would cost to have one completely rebuilt ? Also, does the $900 quote sound about right? Thanks
Jim

If the spindle is smooth it is OK and won't need to be replaced. Clean, and grease it. More likely the idler is shot. Replace the bushings/bearings in the arm/deck joint ($5). Replace the idler pulley ($15). If the spindle pulley in't perfect replace it ($15). If the drive pulley in't perfect replace it ($15).

Level the deck. If the idler, and spindle pulleys are not in a parallel plane with the drive pulley you will throw belts.

Balance and sharpen the blade.

Disconnect the spark plug wire, and have someone SLOWLY turn the engine over with the PTO engaged. Look at he belt path with the deck at all hights. You will not throw any more belts.

Hi Jim,
I am having the exact same problem with a 7 year old model 2160 with a 42 inch deck. I destroyed a belt today with less than 10 hours on it. I am running NAPA B-108 belts due to price and having to replace them so often. NAPA belts are about $25.00 and Cub Cadet belts are about double that. When I put a new belt on, it will run about 10 hours and start to roll over in the pulley until it shreads or breaks clean.
I looked at my pulleys closely today and all have barely visible wear. I can feel a little wear inside the pulley with my finger. However, it just doesn't look like it would be enough to destroy belts like it does.
Question to the board. Will moving up to a C size belt be advisible or should I just bite the bullet and order all new pulleys and belt?? Sorry for the long reply.

Cub cadet has found a way to keep us from useing anything but oem belts and pullies. The width pitch of your 2000 series cubs is not standard .The NAPA belt will not ride in the pully squarely. I just replacd one on my 2185 for about $35. It had almost 300 hours on the pto belt. GOOD LUCK !!

That explains the problem. I didn't realize the NAPA belt was a different width. Thanks again.

My Papaw had an older cub. The idler bearings would go bad and eat the belts quick. You can take the belt off and turn the idlers slow and if they feel like there is sand in them or click when you turn them change them. Dad used to drill the rivets out and just change the bearings. Used screws and nuts to put back together. Mash the ends of the screws to keep the nuts on though.

Do you buy your belts at the Cub Cadet store?

Does it shred the belt or does it take chunks out of it?

Sorta comes apart in chunks. I've also noticed that I can grease the deck fully, mow only one time, and then it takes about 20 pumps of my grease gun to re-grease each spindle bearing. Where's all my grease going ???
