Is my son cursed ?? 4 years ago I replaced center spindle on the 38 inch deck on my cub 126. this year my son is now mowing with it. first time he was on left outer spindle went bad. replaced with new (97 dollars including tax, but it was in stock on a saturday) 3rd time he mowed right outer has gone. I graesed them as usual before the season started. is he cursed or have other people had them go bad in quick succession. is there another cause other than age? I don't want the replacements to go bad not at $97 a shot

The older cub decks have 2 timkin taper roller bearings and 2 seals per spindle. A 126 should have this type of deck. I replaced my deck bearings and seals after 20+ years of use. I use nothing but Timkin bearings as they will outlast most imports. I also machined the internal spacer to allow the bearings to preload. The cartridge type spindle is expensive to replace but they are pre-assembled and require little maintenence. Sten Company sell these units for $55 dealer cost with a estimated retail price of $75. One of the causes of bearing failure on decks is pressure washing them. DON'T!!! Clean them with a flexible putty knife to remove built up grass. Good Luck.

Hi,
I have a 42" deck on my cub. It is about 6 years old and I mow lots of grass from April to Oct every year. However, I grease the spindles before each mowing and have never had any problems. I noticed that you said you greased before each season. I like lots of grease. Good luck.

I can't say why the bearing is going bad so often but, I just got back from the local dealer here. The gal said if my 42" deck on my 1968 125 had the cartridge bearing, they were no longer available. You have to buy the whole hub, maybe this is what your buying alread for yours. She tells me all the older decks could or do have this bearing. This isn't looking good if they only last a short while. I have a '72 Sears/Roper 38" deck, these are the toughest decks. They take the same bearings a Ford front spindle takes, Timken bearings. If there's a way to machine these cub deck spindles to fit those Timken bearings, this would be the way. Replacing all three bearings would pay the machinist bill plus buy him lunch, dinner, Chrismas present.....

the 126 and 125 both use the older type of replaceable bearing spindle. the ones ryan's dealer is thinking of are for the newer stamped decks. new bearings can be had at napa for $7 or the whole kit from MTD for about 30. $97 it better be installed for $97!!!i gresse mine every other mowing (about 5 hours of run time) i'm still running bearings from 40 years ago as best i can tell

Each of these bearings have lasted almost 30 years
center was 28 Yr old outer two are 32 yr old. just seems funny the last two originals went bad in rapid succesion. 97$ is for OEM replacement of entire spindle houseing and all (except pulley).
if there was somewhere to get replacement bearings and seals i kept old parts. if I repaired them now then grandsons (if i let it reproduce)could put on in another 30 yrs.
