Hello Everyone,

Sorry to bother you with this, but I removed the blades for sharpening on my
Cub Cadet 108. This is the first time
since I got it and I was wondering if there
is some special way to brace the middle
blade/shaft to tighten and untighten the
bolt that holds the blade. The only thing
I found was a grease fitting with hex head
to put a wrench on. The outside blades were okay, I was able to put a wrench on the
hex head of the pulleyed shaft after removing
the belt cover. Any tips appreciated.

Put a pipe over the blade to hold it.

The blade moving is not the problem.
I can wedge a piece of wood in to hold
the blade, but the pully turns through the
belt as you try to turn the bolt holding
the blade. It all turns through the hole
in the blade. So I need a way to hold
the pulley or shaft connecting it all together.
As I said, the outer blades have a hex head
on the pulley side. Just slip another wrench
on that side to hold it while loosening the bolt holding the blade in place.

I'm like John.... I use an impact wrench to remove all My mower blades... But try to get some oil or WD-40, PB Blaster on the threads and Hope the nuts aren't cross-threaded. There should only be a few exposed threads beyond the nut...Any chance of getting a pipe wrench on the collar right above the blade? Stay as close to the blade as You can so You don't collapse that collar.... It's just a thin steel sleeve to keep grass from accumulating around the lower grease seal. If that fails, remove the capscrew the grease fitting is installed in and the spindle and blade should drop right out of the pulley and bearings. Be very careful about where the shims 7 washers go. Then you can put the whole spindle in a vice and remove the nut.

Oh, I see your dilema, I hadn't thought about that. Not really sure, the dealer I work at in the summer when home from school, we use all air impact wrenches, so never have encountered that. Now you got me thinking....I'll post back if I come up w/something, in the mean time, good luck...
