I'm looking to buy a new mower and have this one in mind. The competition is all pretty much priced the same. I was curious as to your thoughts about this machine. I have read alot of stuff about MTD cheaping the cubs and most of the talk is about the 1000 series. Deere has low end models too and there isnt much difference between a Scotts and a low end Deere. Why does Cub seem to get so much more slack. I look at the 3000 model and see cast iron rear end, drive shaft not belts, diff lock, etc. Not sure why Deere doesnt offer diff lock. So is there really anything wrong with the 3000 tractor or are people just taking smut?

My Dad got a new 124 in 1969 and mowed and hit every thing with it for 30 years until he got his new cadet. He has about 500 hrs on it with no problems so it has got to be a very well built machine.PS the front nose is NOT as tough as the 124 , he found that out the second day he had it when flew in the barn and hit grain drill hitch(new nose, hood, engine cover)

Thanks. I look at them and think the same. Diff-lock is a nice feature. Probably get a cub.

Matt:
I bought a Cub Cadet Model 3240 (Year 2001 40th Anniversary Edition) with a 54" deck last July. I also have an older 1979 Cub Cadet 1200 (pre-MTD tractor). And, I have owned a John Deere 240 and 265. They are all good L&G tractors. I recently completed a complete rebuild of the older 1200, so I know what the older models are made of. I can tell you from making direct comparisons of the components, the 3240 is a tough, well-built, easy to operate and maintain L&G tractor. You can listen to whomever you want about the so-called MTD curse, but the 3240 that I own is true to the traditional Cub Cadet quality. I've had it for 7 months and I have used it to mow, plow, and pull a blade. It is the best L&G tractor I have owned. I did have to grind down the wings on the mower blades, though. The force of the blades' vacumn was raising too much dust. Other than that, I wouldn't trade it for any other machine I have seen.

There's nothing wrong with the 3000-series Cubs. When you see the driveshaft, differential lock, and other features, you're seeing a good tractor. I spent an entire summer on an MTD-built Cub mowing grass for a local power station; it was well-built, and it took a lot of abuse without breaking down. One of my coworkers has owned an MTD-built Cub for nearly ten years, and it has served him well, too.
