I have a cub cadet 104 that has been running fine until the other day. It just started smoking, not a lot, but very noticeable. Was wonsering if any immediate action was neded to prvent major problems.
I have a second engine that I plan to rebuild this summer, but don't want to throw a rod or anything in the meantime.

Check your oil for the odor of fuel, as a leaky
inlet needle can cause gas to seep down and fill
the crankcase, raising the oil level and causing
your smoking. If this is the case do not run it
for long. fish

I've already changed the oil in it, so I know that it is not gas leaking through.

Must admit that my backup engine, to be rebuilt, ruined the rod by that same problem.

It's probably just getting tired. If you religiously check and top off the oil every time you mow, you should have no problems. I know of Kohlers that have gone for years with a slight to moderate smoking problem.

You may check the valve cover breather when the engine is running under a load, warmed up. Just glance down there. If you see blue smoke coming out, she's got worn rings and is tired.

Likewise, a clogged breather vent will cause pressure in the crankcase and may cause oil burning. Kohlers normally operate at a vacuum in the crankcase. So you might want to be sure the engine is huffing out that breather when it runs.

make sure the oil is at its proper level, if its over filled it will not run properly
