I have a 2185 that is about 5 years old, and it has about 200 hrs on it.

I live in Connecticut and I have a large driveway. Should I add a plow, chains and weights to this tractor? I’m concerned that it isn’t heavy enough to plow the snow.

What is the best way to add weight? My dealer tells me wheel weights are out: the holes don’t line up. The tires are smooth, and they slip very easily. Can I replace the tires?

The plows, chains and weights are expensive, so I don’t want to go this route and be disappointed.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Tony
I have a cub 3206 that I push snow with and it has done great. I like what Jeff Blazey said, my cub is setup just like he stated.

i am a cadet dealer in new york , we have two stores, we sell cadet, simplicity, and kubota tractors. i have had good results with blades on cadets. be sure to go with 4 suit case weights on thr rear weight bracket, so you have enough weight, bar tire will not make much difference, the 2 link spacing chains are much better, smoother ride, blade works good if you keep up with the snow as it falls, the disadvantage is you will loose width in the driveway if you dont push it back far enough to begin the year, a blade can be used to push soil, stone ,etc, the blower is a good boat anchor in the summer, if you buy the blower, stay away from the 303 blower, buy the 340 or the new 341 blower they have a drive shaft to eliminate a belt in the drive, happy plowing- jeff

I too have the front blade, model 307, I wish there were another model blade for these tractors, mine is very similar, a 2186...

Reason to be careful, in ice, or pushing snow up onto a bank when spring comes, be careful not to allow the blade to lift the front end of the tractor as you'll bend the A frame and then the center piece which is the angle engage metal piece which is attached to the spring and trigger will then bend and the blade will go to the left or right, the only way to fix it is to have it removed and bend the A frame back and replace the two metal pieces. What seems to happen is over the winter, especially for me since I have a gravel driveway, the bolt under the blade will loosen and break the cotter pin then loosen enough to allow the A to bend then the thing breaks. It is known that if you slam the blade you'll damage the impliment but not the blade itself and/or eject yourself too...I'm just saying I wish the manual was more specific toward avoiding such an occurance on gravel. My dealer knows little of the issue, Cub replaced the entire model 307...Thanks to Mr. Hammons of Cub..anyway, the big deal is continued problems, DON'T scrape and drive quickly if you know there are objects under the soil so moving gravel/soil is fine, just don't smash the tractor pedal if you are beginning to catch the ground, better to stop, back up and move extremely slowly to avoid this.

Otherwise, if you look at the setup say versus the dozer blade of a JD, this is much more stout but the JD has a lock to stop the blade angle whereas the cub does not.

If anyone knows of a fix, let me know.....

I have a chance to purchase a 303 blower for my yr 2000 2164 tractor. Saw your comments on the 303 is the belt a major problem? This seemed like a good deal but after reading your post I get the feeling I shouldnt do it. Thanks in advance.

The 2185 will be fine for blading snow. You can certainly help the traction by using chains. 2 link and 4 link versions are available(indicates the space between crosslinks) I prefer the 2 link design as it rides smoother.Cub Cadet offers a weight bracket for this tractor that fits either the front OR rear. That would be very helpful also. John Deere weights fit perfectly and are often cheaper. If you use these tips you will be very satisfied with it for snow removal! In heavy snow situations a snowthrower is also available and works great. It is a two stage design that moves tons of snow easily.

I'm not too familiar with your unit, I'm into the old Cub Cadets myself. I tend to think you may have a lawn tractor not a garden tractor, which are a little more heavy duty. Why put a beating on your nice tractor. It doesn't matter how many horsepower you have, its all in the frame and the gearing. My neighbor can't figure out why his 18 horsepower Scott's lawn tractor can't push half as much as my 1965 Cub Cadet with only 10 Horsepower. It may be cheaper to buy a new snowblower or an older garden tractor meant to push and pull heavy loads, that route would probably be cheaper than buyin all the stuff you need for your tractor. I myself live in CT. and I know firsthand how much snow we can get. I hope in some way I have helped you. Ken

chains will make all the difference and will work good on smooth tires..i have a 1650 cub garden tractor with 50 pound weights on each rear tire and it will plow a 1 foot snow pretty good with blade at an angle.it did good also before i got the weights given to me.i weigh 250pounds...the 1650 is a hydro garden tractor. /16hp kohler 1 cylinder ...i use the chains with the bar welded to each of the cross links,,hopes this info helps you.,,the ag tires will make a big difference on the dirt , but not alot of diffence in the ice...don
