I have a 1420 with low hours . It runs away going down hills and after it runs for 15 mins and gets hot it wont pull the hill(cold it will). Sound like the hydro? I pulled it out and split the hydro from the trans. How much do they get or can you have them rebuilt(sunstrand). Should i even think about pulling the hydro apart and looking at the vavled and stuff.(i have rebuilt automotive trans before.)Were would be the best place to get the part my dealer is not very good at fixin just selling. Bruce, are you absolutely positively sure it's in the hydro?? Those models sometimes had pullies on the belt drive system which caused exactly what you have described for symptoms, because the pullies would split and seperate somewhat. I would check that as well as the belt for signs of burning/slipping before I'd tear into that hydro. I seriously doubt that it IS a hydro problem. One thing you might also do is examine the old fluid;does it contain lots of metalllic particles? Does it smell burnt? Does the hydro case show any hotspots? Is there any grass buildup around the fan that would prevent adequate cooling? If you can answer no to these then double check that belt drive system including the tensioner to verify that it IS moving to maintain belt tension and inspect those durned pullies well. Give 'er some fresh fluid and filter and try it again.

I pulled the hydro and checked to make sure the dump valve was free(it was). I did not find a filter though. The fluid wasnt real bad but had some metallic to it(about what you would see in a normal hydraulic pump). Put it all back together with new fluid and it does the same thing. I have also noticed i can push the tractor cold or hot(i can here the fluid bybassing somewere) not running and i never could do that before . I dont know, everbody around here wants 700 to 800 bucks for one and thats with me installing it. To me that is to much to spend on this ,it never really has been a good tractor.Guess i will have to pull my old 654 wheel horse out of retirement LOL. Maybe i will pull the hydro apart see if any of the valves or balls are screwed up.Thanks everybody!! BC

First try to check the Fluid level in the hydro unit,Might be low whene cold has just enough to run the tran's but as it warms up the fluid get's thinner and mostlikley if low getting foamy Causing no drive actions

Thanks but it was full cold and hot. I drained it and the fluid was dirty(but no water or peices). It seems that it rolls now when its parked, think maybe the dump valve is stuck?Did you ever have the sunstrand unit apart? Thanks Bruce

I guy told me he was quoted $425 for a rebuilt hydro unit. Here's what ya do: Call Scott Madson at Madson's Service at 920-773-2661. Tell him yer problem. Scott's a CC dealer, he knows his stuff, he's reasonable on prices and he'll ship quick and not gouge ya for it. He also has used stuff, so he may have a less expensive used hydro motor and pump for ya.

Now, I don't know what Scott'll tell ya, but I've seen clogged hydro fluid filters cause that problem. It's in the service manual as a troubleshoot, too. Might be a change of HyTran and filter is all you ever needed.

Also, be sure to check the link to the engine. Sometimes the pin there gives way, shaft will turn OK when cold but gets loose and turns slower as it heats up.

Good luck...call Scott.
