I wrote in a couple of weeks ago about a Cub Cadet with a Kohler Command 18 hp that would not start. I mentioned that I had checked for spark, fuel and compression. Well, I got around to taking it apart over the weekend and thought I would share my findings with everyone. The motor was grossly out of time due to a sheared off flywheel key. I suspect that this could happen from hitting something with the blades and causing a trauma to the drivetrain, or maybe it was just a defective key. In any case, I guess I will be more careful mowing around the place and look for hiding land mines as I mow.

Tom- That is not a common problem on those bigger engines that drive the mower with a belt. It happens all the time on mowers that have the blade fastned to the end of the crankshaft, I suspect that the flywheel wasn't tight to start with and the key failure was due to that. Great job of isolating your trouble. Mr.B
