Recently acquired a cub cadet 149 hydro. Doesn't seem to be anything to hold the hood when open. It just opens until the hood and grille castings meet. It binds on the hinge an bit and I'm wondering if there should be a rod/chain/cable to take the weight?

I have a 149 that the ower before me took a pull cord rope and tied it to the cross part on the hood then tied the other end to the motor lift hook on the motor. the lenght was just enough to go past 90 deg. so it would not hit the front of the front of the tractor the rope will not get into any thing or so for it has not.

Kohler and Onan are two different engine manufacturers, but gunk on the helical drives
of any starter would cause the problems you have
described. Carb spray would probably be a good start. Fish

No, that's the way they are made. I like to stick a rag there to prevent it from hitting the casting. Also have used that gray foam pipe wrap insulation as a buffer there. If you don't mind modifying it, a chain is a great idea, but I wanted to keep mine original.
